is the Robert S. Rifkind Chair in American ÂÌñÉç history at the ÂÌñÉç Theological Seminary.ÌýHer research interests include American ÂÌñÉç history, the history of youth and childhood, Yiddish culture, and the history of sexuality. Her first book,ÌýÌý(Stanford University Press) addressed the experiences of youth in postwar ÂÌñÉç summer camps and the place of intergenerational negotiation in the making of American ÂÌñÉç culture. Her next book considers how changing conceptions of modern youth and childhood shaped American ÂÌñÉç life. Sandra has published academic work inÌýÂÌñÉç Social Studies,ÌýAmericanÌýÂÌñÉçÌýHistory, and theÌýJournalÌýof the History of Childhood and Youth, and popular writing in theÌýNew York Times,ÌýSlate, andÌýHaaretz.
Previous to her joining JTS, Sandra was a visiting assistant professor of American ÂÌñÉç History and director of the Archive of the American ÂÌñÉç Left in the Digital Age at New York University. SheÌýreceived her doctorate from New York University’s joint History and Hebrew Judaic Studies program in 2018, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Ben Gurion University and Stanford University. She is the founder and executive producer of the Yiddish-language podcastÌýand serves on the editorial board ofÌýIn geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies.
